Smith Corona Skyriter Portable

November 11, 2014 By Paul

This crafty portable was brought in by one of our dedicated collectors (along with another portable). This poor thing has a litany of items; right ribbon spool is stuck, three keys stick badly, and it is filthy with years of pencil eraser debris everywhere in the components. A multi-step clean was required first with compressed air and several degreasing and re-oiling events. The right spool finally cleared and we were able to … [Read more...]

L.C. Smith Corona Number 8 / 11

November 11, 2014 By Paul

This wonderful piece of industrial art was brought in after being used as a home decoration. There is an inspired writer in the house so they want it working. It is missing a ribbon spool nut, needs ribbon (that again!) and a good cleaning. … [Read more...]

Royal Desktop

November 11, 2014 By Paul

Brought in for general service after being in storage for a number of years. This machine needs ribbon (a common theme), general cleaning and adjustment. The Royal Typewriter Company began operations in 1906 though it was founded two years prior in 1904. Manufacturing began in Brooklyn, New York but by 1908 it was transferred to Hartford, CT. Its dominance in the marketplace began early with the release of their standard desktop typewriters and … [Read more...]

Smith-Corona Galaxie Deluxe

November 11, 2014 By Paul

The Smith-Corona Galaxie Deluxe typewriter was made between 1967 and 1970. This lovable light blue model even has a matching blue platen. There is a good reason the Smith-Corona portables were so popular, as they are a really good machine with a light touch that makes it easy to use. This little gem needs a bit of work with broken linkage and a missing spring. Note the power space bar is disconnected. … [Read more...]

Mr. Montgomery – his other passion

November 10, 2014 By Paul

When Montgomery returned from the war, he went back to the family business, which eventually moved to Bremerton. Besides the machines, Montgomery’s other big love has been the Bremerton Community Theatre. He has acted in or been part of the production of more than 145 shows. “It looks like the end of an era. We’re trying to figure out what he needs to retire,” says past president Paul Holiday. Montgomery tries to explain his 85 years of … [Read more...]

Mr. Montgomery starts his career

November 10, 2014 By Paul

Montgomery’s father worked for Underwood Typewriters in 1902, while also working at a stationary store in Seattle. There was always a typewriter around for him to use. “I started goofing around with these machines when I was in grade school,” he said. Montgomery was first in charge of putting the ribbon on the typewriters. He learned more complex repairs, but he didn’t initially want to make it a career. “I had no intention of being a … [Read more...]

Robert Montgomery, age 92 reparing vintage typewriter

Mr. Montgomery, Bob to his friends, is a Master Craftsman of office machine repair. Bob’s particular specialty is the industrial era machine you know as the typewriter. Many of you know Mr. Montgomery as the guy who gets you back to work with little fanfare and a good repartee of additional knowledge of your favorite machine.
