This Big guy is for sale, $20. I love the older Royals and this machine came to me from a customer rescue. Unfortunately, these wide carriage machines are only worth $20 bucks no matter how nice they clean up.
This guy had so many ailments it was over $300 in labor (and more in parts) to get it running. So the customer did what any reasonable person does; buys a nice functioning portable machine instead! Left this huge mess with me as a donation. Well I have a sweet spot in my steely little heart for the un-wanted, so I decided to clean up the KH machine and get the monster running.
Saw dust, saw dust, saw dust, plus shellacked oils and decades of tobacco residue. After a good vacuuming and vigorous blow out, the machine went into the solvent station for several hours of flushing. I used quite a bit of lacquer thinner to remove the shellacked oils on the carriage. The variable on the platen needed to be removed to clean it enough to get it working. The platen itself was in adequate shape.
The paper bale rollers and front platen rollers needed replacing. The paper bale ruler is held in place by tapered pins instead of screws. Normally you can take a drift pin and drive out the tapered pins, and after two days of oil and turmoil I resorted to a needle punch. That was all those tapered devils needed. Lisa was in the shop recently and helped clean up the badly oxidized paint.
