This nice black typewriter had been in the family for some time and had made its recent journey mostly being stored in a garage. Fortunately, there was only surface rust and most components were functioning just fine. The tab rack was bent, most likely from someone picking up the typewriter from the back of the carriage. This is pretty common as these suckers are HEAVY. The margin release also needed adjusting. There were quite a few type bars that were sticking and some that had large burrs that needed trimming to get them to strike nice and quick. The right hand platen knob was shattered so I scrounged around the old parts drawers and found one that was close.
The paint was heavily oxidized and I was wondering if I could get it to really shine. I’m thankful that Royal’s paint came out looking pretty good. It is not new looking, yet that gloss is coming through!
