Brought in for general service after being in storage for a number of years. This machine needs ribbon (a common theme), general cleaning and adjustment. The Royal Typewriter Company began operations in 1906 though it was founded two years prior in 1904. Manufacturing began in Brooklyn, New York but by 1908 it was transferred to Hartford, CT. Its dominance in the marketplace began early with the release of their standard desktop typewriters and was further catapulted with the addition of their portable typewriter line in 1926. Royal was, in fact, very late introducing their portables. Most other manufacturers had already done so for a decade or longer. During WWII the company halted typewriter production and manufactured guns, ammunition and airplane parts for the military. Royal built factories in the Netherlands, Portugal and elsewhere.
