This Tom Hanks signed Remington 5 portable streamlined typewriter is from the year 1940. The typewriter is on display at the shop until the end of May, then will go on sale.
Recently, Tom Hanks sent many repair shops typewriters from his collection as gifts. Tom was nice enough to include our shop with a Remington 5 portable. The typewriter came with an enjoyable note from Tom and a Playtone towel. Kinda odd, that towel. Maybe Tom realized each machine he gifted would require ponderous thoughts and great outpouring of perspiration.
Certainly this typewriter came to us with a bit of shipping damage. The loose dog mechanism from the escapement rocker was broken off and in the bottom of the box. Well, good thing he sent the typewriter to a repair shop!
Lisa, my lovely wife and lead technician, got to work. Lisa took the escapement rocker from a parts machine and transplanted it to the Hanks typewriter. Lisa then gave the machine a good cleaning, a new J.J. Short platen, new paper rollers and new TTS Business Products (Tony recently retired) rubber feet. The only thing missing is a carrying case. Oh, the typewriter types real nice putting good print on the page. We think Tom Hanks would approve.
This Tom Hanks signed typewriter is for sale after May 31 and comes with the Playtone towel (so far un-used) and Tom’s note outlining the typewriter as a gift to BOMC, a clear vinyl cover. And . . . a typewriter art print of Tom himself by artist Kelye Kneeland. How about that!
