I love typewriter stuff. I mean all those things that are not specifically typewriters yet are part of our typosphere; typewriter ads, t-shirts, award pins, stationary, pencil sharpeners, even rubber stamps. I was surfing eBay this week and saw these two pins that I just HAD TO HAVE. Enjoy. … [Read more...]

Royal “P” Portable
This little portable came to me with a ribbon vibrator missing half the goal posts. It was a Christmas gift of the best kind, a typewriter. The customer and I chatted and if I could not find a replacement vibrator from our stock I would repair it. After a studious search through our typewriter hospital, no luck. You can't have a typewriter with the ribbon flopping all over. I matched the gauge of the metal as close as possible, referenced … [Read more...]
Canon Ultralight Portable – Why?
I've been told I favor the older, classic machines so here is one for you. I've had this primo delicious and excellent Canon TypeStar for some time, afraid to share. . . I picked it up from the local Goodwill thinking it was a lap top computer, and to my delight it was a battery-powered typewriter! This little typewriter, weighing in at a minuscule 5.5 pounds is the ultimate in electronic typewriters. It is a fully featured spell … [Read more...]
Underwood Golden Touch Portable from 1956
This customers parents gave their daughter the best kind of gift, a typewriter! Not just any typewriter, one that has been in the family for a long time. As this machine had not seen much use for a while there were some keys sticking and she just needed cleaning and re-oiling. A very nice Underwood portable typewriter. … [Read more...]
Remington 17 KMG from 1950
I know, you are thinking "man, he's going to go off on how wonderful and beauticious Remington typewriters are. . . AGAIN!". Ha, damn straight I am. I love these machines. This Remington desktop typewriter came to me as a tune up and the carriage would not stay put. You know, push it to the right and it ziiiips to the left. That is no way to write a novel. Before I got to cleaning up the basics I decided to look at the escapement to make … [Read more...]
Smith Corona Super-Silent from 1946
This nice customer is on a tight budget, yet the typewriter really needed some major work. The draw string was broken and the platen was REALLY well used. Just look at the imprints from years of constant use. This customer knew that if the typewriter was repaired back to near new, she would get a life time's worth of work from this finely engineered hunk of metal. Of course, the first thing is to ship the platen off to J.J. Short for … [Read more...]
Paper Roller Replacements
I do a lot of rubber replacement on the older machines. Show me a machine from the 1930's and earlier, and I'll almost always need to replace rubber feet, washers, paper rollers and platens. Lately I've been thinking (as I'm scraping off the rubber from yet another roller core). Most days in the shop is tinkering with the machines and lot of replacing rollers. I noticed that many of the manufacturers, over time, began to re-think paper … [Read more...]
Making Copies!
Making copies! That's what I think every time I need to make a part for a typewriter. Today, I machined a piece that hangs from the right margin stop of a Royal HHE. This little thing hangs like a pendulum and activates the bell clapper. Yep, that's all it does. To make matters worse, it is an oblong shape that needs to balance freely. To compensate for the weight difference between the original steel part (being duplicated in brass) the … [Read more...]
Royal Portable OT from 1934. Can you say Dvorak?
Yippee, I finally get to service a Dvorak typewriter! This beauty was bought at a local "antique" shop and is in very good shape. It took me longer to test the functions on this one as the keyboard is quite different from a QWERTY. Serial number OT356285 Here is a link: http://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/imlsmohai/id/2101 … [Read more...]
