I equate the Remington 24 from 1967 to a Royal Empress. Both are solid machines within bulbous decorations of a shell. This customer machine came in for service as the line lock was hanging up and the keys were sticking on the left. To get to anything, you have to remove the large plastic shell from the chassis. Normally a simple task made harder by rust at each mounting screw. One needed drilling out. After a few minutes of discovery, why … [Read more...]
A pair of Optimas
These Optima typewriters are part of a customer collection. Bought off the internet, the green guy arrived with multiple shipping damage problems. It was skipping badly, carriage would RUN, tabs interfered, margins would not adjust and the paint got a bit banged up. The customer got my estimate for the repair work, and since he wanted to have the machine professionally repainted, I put him in the work queue when it was ready from the paint … [Read more...]
Linea 98 is a White Out King
I'm not sure how many gallons of white out was used with this Olivetti Linea 98 typewriter. Every paper roller was covered. Indeed, the platen, keys, segment, you name it was covered as if a Seagull was in the home. … [Read more...]
Summer Hours Are Here!
The shop experiences a normal summer slow down as folks concentrate on family and outdoor activities. The memory of happy winter times using a typewriter fades quickly as the weather improves. That means I too take a bit of time for family. This summer, June 21 to September 23, the shop is open Wednesdays through Saturdays 10AM to 4PM. … [Read more...]
Remington Monarch Pioneer from 1937
Nick brought in this Remington Monarch Pioneer, serial number C110280, from 1937. This little bit of simplicity is in top condition. Top condition means it is a Remington from the thirties, so it needed a new platen, paper rollers, feet and a drawcord (don't they all!). If you had to have a super reliable machine, with the fewest parts to go wrong, I think I found your Apocalypse machine! Seriously, all the factory connection points for … [Read more...]
Tiny Typewriters
My customers are a great lot. I love it when a customer stops by to spread a little joy. Often they surprise me with small tokens of their appreciation. One such customer is also a 3D printing enthusiast. I love these tiny 3D printed typewriters he brought by. They are business card holders! … [Read more...]
Underwood 5 from the Year 1919
This Underwood 5 customer machine was brought into the shop for a well deserved refurbishment. Used well then stored for decades this typewriter is dirty, dirty, dirty! To make sure the typewriter functions well I take it apart to its basic components; type bars and segment come off, the carriage is removed, the tab assembly and ribbon feed off the machine, even the draw band. This allows a thorough inspection and removal of all … [Read more...]
Platens With Micro Cracks Are Weird
What is it with Hermes platens? This is the third Hermes 3000 machine I've had in for service in three weeks where a platen has tiny tiny cracks across the surface. The print on paper is just fine so I'm a bit reluctant to recommend replacing with new. What a strange thing. … [Read more...]
Smith Premier No. 4 from 1904
This big guy was brought in for a complete cleaning, tune up and new rubber. The very worn platen was sent to J.J. Short and arrived back in perfect condition. Man those folks do great work. The metal draw band was also toast. Once opened, I discovered it was missing three type bar slugs (1/4, $ , _ ). The pound key top was broken and the ribbon reverse rod was snapped in half. A bit of solder and epoxy worked on the ribbon reverse. There … [Read more...]
Voss A24 Portable Typewriter – Shipping Damage
This Voss A24 portable typewriter from the year 1957 was brought in for repair. The customer bought the machine using the internet and it arrived damaged. Damn, I see so many of these. Well, it is a Voss so worth getting it fixed. The carriage was rubbing, back space not working, the card guide a bit wonky and the carriage return arm bent too low to clear the typewriter. The upper and lowercase alignment was way off. I initially couldn't tell … [Read more...]
