There are plenty of these "wedge" typewriters that use a plastic type wheel out there. I particularly like the Brother and Smith-Corona models. The machines are simple, easy to use and have correction. Many have an internal memory or correction dictionary. They all come with correction and many with word or entire line correction. The tape cartridges and correction tapes are still commonly available. When I get them inexpensively I … [Read more...]
Paint that Typewriter!
Lately I've been inspired by Typewriter Fever's re-painted typewriters. Recently, someone on Facebook shared glitter painted typewriters! There are plenty of machines that are as regrettable as a margarita blender with no ice and yet type real nice. I tried tomato RED on a Smith-Corona and it turned out pretty good. I have IBM Selectric typewriters stacked like cord wood in the back shop and pulled out two to try the magic of new paint. With … [Read more...]
What does Budweiser have to do with Typewriters?
This article is a bit far away from typewriters. Some of my more endearing customers bring interesting things for me to repair. I cannot turn them away, especially when it is an advertising gizmo that lights up and rotates! The rotating beer sign was a bit unbalanced and it turns out the rotation motor gears were stripped. Fortunately, there is a huge fan base on the interwebs for beer signs. HUGE! I found the direct replacement for the … [Read more...]
Brosette Number 4
I got the trio of Brosettes all ready for pick up and this delightful Brosette typewriter from the year 1953 shows up for service. The machine itself needed the right side ribbon feed repaired. It is pretty straight forward to remove the ribbon feed assembly and repair. Then it was just some minor service. Mostly the typewriter case needed work. New rubber feet and a new leather handle. I could not find an escutcheon that was close to the … [Read more...]
A wonderful Trio of Brosettes
I love my typewriter collectors as they bring in some very interesting machines. These three Brosette portables are from one of my favorite collector guys. You do not get the opportunity to have a Brosette typewriter from West Germany in many collections. I'd only seen photos. It was a real hoot to have three in the shop all in one swoop. According to the notes in typewriterdatabase.com these lovelies were manufactured between 1953 and … [Read more...]
Royal Model 10 from the Year 1931
This Royal model 10 was brought in for repair and needed a ton of work. Someone really used this typewriter . . . a lot. A genuine dirt bucket, this machine needed a heavy cleaning and the type bar rest fell apart as I was cleaning the type faces. The platen had seen an amazing amount of wear, the paper rollers disintegrating and pretty much if it was rubber that stuff had seen better days! After assessing the machine, we agreed it needed … [Read more...]
Tom Thumb Toy Typewriter
This toy typewriter was brought in by a customer for some light service. I like the toy typewriters. Not a single one types worth a hoot, yet they are plain cute. This nice red President is a well preserved example of the plastic variety. The machine has been serviced and will be a unique gift. It even has a carrying case! … [Read more...]
Musical Typewriters, My Oh My!
It is not often you are graced with a typewriter collector's recent finds. In this case an Oregon collector shared his recent catch of three Music Writer typewriters http://www.musicprintinghistory.org. Two are Olympia SG3 machines and one a R. C. Allen Visiomatic A machine. He had me service one of the Olympia and the R. C. Allen. Each is a modified typewriter by the Music Print Corporation of Boulder Colorado to accommodate the … [Read more...]
Remington Junior Typewriter, what a treat!
The Remington Junior typewriter was made from 1914 to 1918. A three bank keyboard, it has both an uppercase and a figure shift similar to the Corona 3 portable typewriter. This hunk of iron is a "portable" as it came with a case. And what a case it is! It is so funny to open a very large case, and then see a some what smallish typewriter within. This typewriter is a family heirloom and is in quite nice condition. … [Read more...]
Man the Torpedo! Cursive, and that is a delight.
This creamy yellow Torpedo portable typewriter from the year 1960 came to me a bit broken. Dropped of course, and now complete with multiple bent levers and the paper bail. So sad as I see this with Voss typewriters as well. After getting a few of these models in the shop for dropsy repair I've developed the opinion that the carrying case is to blame. Yes! I blame an inanimate object and its deceased designers. The way both the Torpedo and … [Read more...]
